Water Walking

Today in the early morning a group of 6th and 7th graders set out on a quest! There goal was to take as many gallons of water as they could carry and walk it one mile up to Santa Barbara Middle School. Some didn't wear shoes, some had 10 gallons, other had 2 gallons. The goal of this was to try to feel what its like to do it every day like some people in Africa do. Some people in our group are even taking the amount of water they carried and are using only THAT for the whole day! Overall it was a quite fascinating experience.

My Visit With Kevin Day 2

Today when I woke up I went to take a walk around the pool in my hotel. While I was walking I looked over to the pool and saw a huge ALIGATOR!

I was super scared and ran inside and never came out. For breakfast I met up with Kevin and we ate at this good pancake place. After breakfast we went to his office in his school for me to look around. I saw that there was a lot of heat posters. I hate the heat! When I walked around the halls of this school I found a group of people that liked the Knicks!! So I hung around with them for a day because they were awesome! But I noticed that everyone was in some kind of group and no one was alone. Later that day I had to go because I had to get back to Santa Barbara tomorrow for a math test!

My Visit with Kevin In Florida day 1

Today I landed in Miami, Florida to be greeted by a smiling face, it was KEVIN!. We exchanged hellos and went out to get some lunch because it was 12:00 and we were both hungry. We had some burgers and fries and it was good!

Then Kevin took me by his school for a quick tour because I was tired from the trip. When I was touring I thought everyone looked happy and it was great. They all looked about my age, and when I asked one of them what there favorite sports team was they said Heat. And we had a big debate about it. I was tired from the jet lag so I went to my hotel and went to bed.

My visit with Maruge Day 5

Today I am on flight American Airlines flight 201 flying from Kenya to LAX. Maruge made me a walking stick was a souvenir. I learned you don't need a lot of stuff to have fun and learn in school. The kids here looked like they were having more fun then the kids at my school. I am glad to get back because it was SO hot in Kenya. Well my I think I am going to take a nap now because I am very TIRED.

My visit with Maruge Day 4

Today me and Maruge went into Nairobi.

The guy who took us called it "Nairobery!" Since Maruge didn't have a lot of money he payed for the bus far with his goat. On the bus ride Maruge told me about his time as a rebel and how he fought the British and regained Kenya. He also described very vivid how his wife and child was killed by the British. I felt so bad for Maruge so I bought him M&M's from a store with some of the money I brought. Maruge said he never had M&M's before and he didn't like it. He said, " I think I will stick with rice."

My visit with Maruge Day 3

Today everything was going normally the kids were sitting at their desks with me and Maruge and the teacher was teaching when we heard screams and bangs on the side of the classroom. It was a gang attacking the school for some reason. Maruge walked out with his walking stick and was like and ninja hitting them with his walking stick. It was AWESOME.

Maruge said he thought they came because some parents were mad at Maruge for going to school because he was old and the kids wouldn't learn as much. I didn't see that at all! everyone was included in my opinion and was having fun.

My visit with Maruge Day 2

Today when me and Maruge were walking to school I saw a van pull up and like 20 kids come out. It was crazy. I heard they were listening to some crazy guy on the radio it was pretty funny. In school they were learning their 5's. When the teacher asked a kid to go up and write the number 5 he wrote it backwards and everyone laughed at him. I felt bad for him because he was the laughing stock of the class. After class Maruge was nice and helped the kid draw his fives. He taught him like " The old man has a long neck, tummy fat, and the old man wheres a cap." I thought that was the best way to learn 5's EVER! I know that I will never forget how to do my fives now! The teachers at this school are very nice so far and I like how they start each day with a song and dance around the Kenyan flag.

My visit with Maruge Day 1

Today I met Maruge outside of the school. The kid's were doing their chant around the flag of Kenya.

I couldn't think so I TRIED to dance but I was the worst one there. In class they were learning their A's. It was funny how they taught, "A fatty, A thiny." At lunch I waited for them all to get their food then I got rice. The rice was very good.
